Astragalus
Astragalus root has a long history of use in traditional Chinese medicine and is used for a variety of conditions. It is most known for its ability to increase stamina and improve the immune system. In addition to its immune-stimulating effects, some studies have shown that it can reduce some chemotherapy side effects such as poor appetite, anemia, and fatigue. It has some anti-cancer activity but has not been shown to treat or prevent cancer.
Dose
Astragalus root has traditionally been used as a food as well as an herbal supplement, so dosing recommendations vary widely. A dose of a standardized extract 500 mg three times daily has been shown to improve cancer-related fatigue.
Warnings
Astragalus is generally safe and well-tolerated. It is not known to have any dangerous side effects or concerning drug or herb interactions.
